Released in 2001, Moulin Rouge! is a vibrant jukebox musical that blends romance, tragedy and modern pop songs against the backdrop of Paris’ bohemian underworld.

Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the film follows a young writer, Christian (Ewan McGregor), who falls for a dazzling cabaret star Satine (Nicole Kidman).

Nicole Kidman played Satine, the sparkling star of the Moulin Rouge whose secret illness and forbidden romance with Christian drive the film’s emotional core. Satine dreams of becoming a “real actress,” even as she’s caught between love and survival.

In 2002, her work on the film earned her a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and she was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Following the Moulin Rouge! success, Kidman continued to take on complex and varied roles. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Virginia Woolf in The Hours and went on to star in projects ranging from the chilling thriller The Others to epic dramas, like Cold Mountain and Australia.

In more recent years, the 58-year-old actress has found major success on television, earning Emmy and Golden Globe awards for Big Little Lies and leading series, such as The Undoing, Nine Perfect Strangers, and Special Ops: Lioness. Kidman has also become a powerful producer behind the scenes, helping bring many of her projects to life.

Kidman had been married to country music star Keith Urban for nearly two decades until their split in 2025. Together she and Urban have two daughters, in addition to her two adult children from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise, which ended in 2001.

Ewan McGregor starred as Christian, the idealistic young writer who falls deeply in love with Satine and narrates their tragic story. His heartfelt musical performance surprised many fans who knew him from grittier roles, like Nightwatch and Eye of the Beholder.

McGregor is also widely recognized for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and reprising the role in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Other notable projects include films include Down With Love, Trainspotting and Halston, as well as TV shows, like Fargo.

Off-screen, the 54-year-old actor is a father of five and has often spoken about how central his children are to his life. He married French production designer Eve Mavrakis in 1995, and together they had two daughters, Clara and Esther, and later adopted two more daughters, Jamyan and Anouk. The couple separated in 2017 and finalized their divorce in 2020.

In 2021, he welcomed his fifth child, a son named Laurie, with actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and the pair married in a small ceremony in 2022.

Jim Broadbent brought big energy to Harold Zidler, the flamboyant and fast-talking owner of the Moulin Rouge who tries to keep his club afloat at any cost. Zidler is theatrical and humorous but ultimately protective of his performers.

Broadbent is a respected British actor known for films, like Iris, which won him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and his role as Professor Slughorn in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He has continued acting steadily in film and television, including appearances in Paddington and Game of Thrones.

The 76-year-old has been married to artist Anastasia Lewis since 1987 and keeps his personal life largely private.

Richard Roxburgh played the wealthy and possessive Duke of Monroth, whose obsession with Satine threatens her relationship with Christian. His character represents power, money, and control in contrast to the bohemian world of the artists.

The 64-year-old actor is also known for roles in Mission: Impossible 2, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and the Australian TV drama Rake, where he played Cleaver Greene. In recent years, he has continued working in Australian television and film while also returning to the stage.

Roxburgh has been married to actress and cookbook author Silvia Colloca since 2004, and they have three children.

John Leguizamo portrayed Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec as a lively, supportive member of the bohemian circle who helps bring Christian into their creative world. His performance added humor and heart to the artistic group at the Moulin Rouge.

Leguizamo has had a long and varied career, including voicing Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age films and Bruno in Disney’s Encanto. The 65-year-old has also appeared in movies, like To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, John Wick and The Menu.

Off screen, Leguizamo is married to Justine Maurer, and they have two children.

Jacek Koman played the mysterious Unconscious Argentinean, best remembered for his dramatic performance in the “El Tango de Roxanne” sequence. Though a supporting role, it became one of the film’s most unforgettable musical moments.

The 69-year-old is a Polish-born actor and musician who has worked extensively in Australia, appearing in projects like Son of a Gun and Conclave. Koman shares two children with actress Catherine McClements.
