Trina Braxton is mourning the death of her husband, Von Scales.
Scales’ death was announced in a statement shared with PEOPLE on Thursday, Oct. 1. He was 58. No cause of death was given.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Von Scales, beloved husband of Trina Braxton,” the statement read. “The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers, but is asking for privacy at this time as they navigate this unfortunate event.”

“Our wedding day was unpredictable and amazing,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “I’m married to an amazing man, and our night was about displaying our love for each other amongst our loved ones and including our loved ones and blending our families. Who could ask for anything more?!”
Braxton and Scales, a former college basketball player who later found success as a businessman, first met through a mutual friend.
“I was doing business with a guy that just happened to live in her neighborhood and I was coming out of a relationship and he said, ‘When you’re ready, I got somebody for you to meet.’ And we met and it kind of worked out,” Scales said in an appearance with Braxton on the Marriage and Money with Egypt & Mike podcast in 2023.

Scales insisted that he did not know who Braxton was at the time, and was taken aback when he went to her house and saw pictures of her sister, Toni Braxton.
“I’m looking around, I’m like, ‘Damn, this chick likes Toni Braxton,’ because there were pictures everywhere,” he recalled. “I’m like, ‘Damn, what is this, some kind of superfan or something like that?’ And I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, that looks like her.’ So when she came down I said, ‘Do you know her?’ She’s like, ‘That’s my sister.’”

On the same podcast, Braxton said it was “refreshing” to find someone she could build a life with.
“I’d been married twice already, so I had two husbands and I hadn’t built anything with either one of them. There was nothing to expound upon. But now there are things that we can look forward to together, and I’ve never had that before in my life,” she said. “It’s an amazing feeling to be able to lean on someone as opposed to being the person that someone else has to lean on.”
Braxton was previously married to Gabe Solis, who died three years after their divorce was finalized in 2015.
She praised the way Scales handled the situation to Entertainment Tonight in 2019, saying he “really helped me through it.”
“He stood right by me and I knew it was sometimes difficult for him, especially to watch me as his now-fiancée, grieve over someone else,” she said. “But he knew where my heart was and I just thank God for him.”
