Bobby J. Brown passed away on Tuesday, February 24, in a barn fire in Maryland. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that The Wire alum died from diffuse thermal injury and smoke inhalation. Authorities have ruled his death an accident.

The fire reportedly broke out after Brown jump-started a vehicle in the barn. The actor tried to call out to his family to bring a fire extinguisher. However, by the time his family arrived, smoke and flames had already erupted beyond their control. Brown’s wife has reportedly suffered from severe burn injuries while trying to save him (via TMZ).

Brown’s agent, Albert Bramante, has issued an official statement announcing the news of his death. “Bobby J. Brown was a formidable talent and a true professional who brought a rare intensity and authenticity to the screen,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“From his early days as a champion in the ring to his standout performances in projects like The Wire, Bobby was a ‘character actor’ in the truest sense — someone who elevated every scene he was in. We were proud to represent him and will miss his presence and his passion for the craft deeply,” the statement added.

Bobby J. Brown was an amateur boxer when he got an opportunity to appear in the 1988 boxing movie Homeboy alongside Mickey Rourke. He later trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City before making his television debut in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street in 1998.

Brown has since appeared in movies and television shows such as City by the Sea, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Corner, among others. He gained wider recognition for playing Officer Bobby Brown in HBO’s The Wire.
