While some stars may be calling into question the significance of ballet and opera, Rosalía is here to bring the classical art forms roaring back into the mainstream.
On Monday evening, the Spanish pop star kicked off her Lux Tour in Lyon, France, with a spectacle that is just as elaborate and fearless as the opera-inspired album it’s supporting. And it should come as no surprise that a collection of exquisite looks were a key part of the whole operation.

One of the most surprising moments of the set is when Rosalía performs ballet moves, en pointe, mind you, during a rendition of “Porcelana.” In fact, ballet influences a big part of the show, especially when it comes to the fashion.
To achieve this aesthetic, the Grammy winner turned to Ann Demeulemeester for three custom looks that were inspired by the classical art form.

The first consisted of a wrapped chiffon top and pointelle bodysuit, which were paired with a tiered, pleated tutu. The pink, artful tutu stretched like a horizon across Rosalía’s body, and it added a level of drama as she danced. She also completed the look with pink satin ballerina shoes for a fitting touch.

The other two looks included a Napoleonic jacket paired with Bloom trousers and black leather mid-calf boots, as well as a chiffon gown decorated with a crinolina structure and a feathery winged harness—as if Rosalía had taken the ballet uniform and distorted it in her own grungy vision.

All throughout the set, the “Berghain” singer incorporates ballet-tinged elements, from tulle skirts to baby pinks to structured tutus and more. In a way, it feels as though the audience has been transported to the ballet, all while Rosalía is running through her arias and symphonic musical arrangements.

Sometimes, when you want to make transformative art, you’ve got to turn back to the classics.
