A TikTok user is sparking a debate about where a couple should sit when traveling together via airplane

In the comments section of the viral video, many users argued over who should take the middle seat and who should get the window

Others thought that there is room for compromise when it comes to traveling with your significant other

A social media user has sparked a debate online regarding where a couple should sit when traveling together on an airplane.

A recent TikTok shared by user @sssswhitey sparked the conversation about seating assignments when a couple travels. The poster, whose name is Shannon White, shared a video of herself in late November, seated on an airplane looking unhappy before panning to her boyfriend by the window seat.

"Getting a boyfriend is all fun and games until you realize you have to sit in the middle seat row," she wrote on the five-second clip.

"I miss my freedom and the window (jk mostly)," she captioned the video that received over 78K likes on TikTok as of publishing.

TikTokers online certainly had thoughts about the couple's seating arrangements and flocked to the comments section to weigh in.

Some said that their significant others would "never" make them take a middle seat. "My husband has never ever ever made me sit in the middle. Never," someone said.

Others were not a fan of the boyfriend in question. "I don’t like him already," one person said. "If a man makes you sit in the middle he doesn’t like you," another chimed in.

"I’ve never dated anyone who would make me sit in the middle. Not once," a third wrote. "My husband would never," a fourth added.

"Husband in the middle always," someone insisted. "People are less inclined to invade the personal space of a man vs a woman."

Others thought that there was some logic to her taking the middle seat. "Smaller person gets the middle. Has nothing to do with man vs women," one user said. "Me, someone 5 ft and 100 pounds VS my bf, like double that….yeah it makes sense for us to be in the middle 😭," another argued.

"The middle seat is perfectly fine if you’re next to your man, it’s not fine when it’s two strangers on both sides," someone chimed in.

"I don’t mind the middle seat so i’m with you girl! My fiancé is 6'1 and he prefers the aisle to make the flight more comfortable," one TikTok user added. "If it doesn’t bother me to be in the middle and I want to sit by him, I don’t see the harm in letting him have the aisle."

Others defended the arrangement, saying that the middle seat isn't the worst option. "Surprised by these comments lol i always take the middle too why would i make someone who’s larger have less space… plus then u have someone to lay on," one user wrote.

Another said that they compromise with their boyfriend by swapping spots in their airplane row. "My bf and I switch. He likes aisle and I like window. So I get middle seat getting there (him in aisle). I get window seat on the way back and he gets middle seat," they said.

One person offered the wholesome take of doing "nice things" for your partner, with taking an uncomfortable seat on a flight being one of them.

"Hey, so you're allowed to do nice things for your man because you like him... I always give my husband the window seat because he really likes it and I have no strong feelings about it. Just like how he will go get my water before bed even if he's already in bed," they wrote. "It's the small kindnesses that build strong relationships."

When asked about her TikTok sparking such a debate, White told PEOPLE: "I was shocked at the response I received, and the conversation it started on gender roles and relationship standards."

She continued, "We have enjoyed reading the comments and the opinions so many have on 'relationship travel.' Personally, I still think putting the tall, wide-shouldered man in the middle makes for the entire row to be uncomfortable!!"
