A watch salesperson nearly made a big mistake with Luke Combs.

In a recent interview on The New York Times’ Popcast, the country star, 36, recalled buying his first Rolex watch in New York City and getting the full Pretty Woman experience.

Combs showed off a Patek Philippe watch on the show and explained why he enjoys owning a timepiece. “My grandfather got a watch, a Rolex, when he left the mill. He was always insanely proud of it. It signified this achievement. All his work is summed up in this item that he can physically have and wear,” he explained.

For a while, Combs didn’t think getting a watch was “in the cards” for him. “I didn't move to Nashville to get super rich or be famous or whatever. Those things came with what I wanted to do, and obviously it’s wonderful,” he said. “My kids have an amazing life. I'm incredibly thankful for all those things.”

He then shared the story of buying his first watch at an N.Y.C. Rolex store. “I got Pretty Woman’d,” said Combs, referencing the 1990 film’s scene where Julia Roberts’ Vivian Ward character is turned away by a sales clerk due to her appearance.

“I was wearing camo gym shorts, so I don’t necessarily blame them for doing that,” he noted. “There’s the dance-of-the-watch thing, but I don’t know, so I walk in, and I’m like, ‘Stainless steel Yacht-Master, you got one?’ And they’re like, ‘No, what are you talking about?’ And I'm like, ‘What do you mean? Like, this is the store where you sell that.’”

“That's like me walking into the Godiva store and them not having chocolate,” quipped Combs. “Like, what are you talking about? What do you have? And they're like, ‘Oh, well none of these watches. We don't have any of them.’ I'm like, I find it hard to believe that a company is spending money for this real estate in New York City by [Madison Square] Garden, and there's nothing for sale. You're telling me that's a thing?”

That night, Combs was playing the iconic N.Y.C. arena as Jason Aldean’s opening act and felt “bummed” that he couldn’t make his “first big watch purchase” and wear it for the “big moment.”

“This is my grandfather’s watch moment of, ‘Man, I’ve made it, I’m getting here,’” he said. Eventually, the store clerk admitted they “may have one.”

These days, Combs’ watch collection has grown — and he buys a new one for various life milestones. “I bought a watch when each of my sons were born,” said the “Forever After All” singer, who shares sons Tex Lawrence, 3, Beau Lee, 2, and Chet Wiley, born in February 2026, with wife Nicole Hocking Combs.

Combs’ upcoming album, The Way I Am, comes out on March 20.
