A London Tube station has been evacuated after several people reported feeling unwell amid a suspected gas leak.

A British Transport Police spokesperson told The Independent: “Officers were called to Farringdon station at 9.42am on Thursday following reports of a suspected gas leak in the station, with a small number of passengers reporting feeling unwell.

“Officers are in attendance, alongside the ambulance service and the fire brigade, and the station has been evacuated while enquiries are conducted.”

Due to the incident, Thameslink said no trains will stop at Farringdon, but were now able to continue their journeys through the station.

“Trains will soon be able to run through this area and we will get as many as possible to do so,” they said. “That said, many trains and their crews are displaced following the severe disruption this incident has caused. Your journey is still expected to take 60 to 90 minutes longer than usual and we still advise that you travel later on in the day.”

Meanwhile, the entire central London section of the Elizabeth line – which runs through Farringdon – is suspended while investigations are underway.

British Transport Police posted on X: “We are on scene at Farringdon station following reports of a suspected gas leak, with a small number of passengers reporting feeling unwell.”

They said officers remain in attendance alongside members of London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade.

Photographs on social media showed armed police at the scene, and workers in buildings nearby said they had been asked to remain indoors.

Passengers on the Underground using the Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines also face disruption. Meanwhile, a spokesperson said the Elizabeth line had been hit with “severe delays due to an earlier police investigation”.

A 2018 gas leak at London’s Charing Cross station caused major disruption to commuters, and in 2012, Victoria Tube station was also evacuated due to a gas leak in a ticket office. In 2024, parts of the Metropolitan line near Watford were also suspended while a gas leak was fixed.
