King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, began their U.S. visit with a packed first day in Washington, D.C. The royal couple arrived on April 27 and headed straight to the White House, where they were welcomed by Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Their visit included a private tea and a tour of the First Lady’s beekeeping initiative on the White House grounds, which features a beehive modeled after the presidential residence.

The King and Queen moved on to a large-scale garden party at the British Embassy. More than 600 guests from across the U.K. and the U.S. gathered on the embassy lawns, including political and cultural figures. Among those in attendance were British Olympic diver Tom Daley and U.K. Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Christian Turner, alongside senior figures from across the American political spectrum.

Figures from the Trump administration, including Stephen Miller and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, attended alongside Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson also met with King Charles, discussing the monarch’s upcoming address to Congress. “I told him he will be very well received,” Johnson said, describing the speech as a historic moment. “It’s something everyone is excited about. It’s an historical event.”

Queen Camilla spent time with leaders from organizations supporting vulnerable women and children. She met with Michelle DeLaune of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, as well as representatives from domestic violence support groups. Sandra Jackson, CEO of the House of Ruth, described the meeting as meaningful. “To have someone of her stature to give notoriety to this cause is very important,” she said.

Garden parties have long been a staple of royal life in the U.K., typically hosted at Buckingham Palace during the spring and summer. Holding one in Washington added a historical dimension. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth hosted a similar gathering at the British Embassy in 1939.
