Ariana Grande released a music video for her new single “Petal” and kept her announcement characteristically brief. “petal music video out now,” she wrote online.
In the video, Grande plays an aspiring actress auditioning in front of a panel of men, styled in black leggings, an off-the-shoulder top, a neck scarf, vintage sunglasses and pearl earrings. The clip has the look of a 1950s Hollywood screen test, with Grande and other hopeful actresses sharing a waiting room scene that evokes both the glamour and the anxiety of that era. Fans praised the concept widely, and called it cinematic and nostalgic.
However, comments across YouTube, X and other platforms began flagging concern about Grande’s physical appearance. “She is extremely thin and it’s concerning,” one person wrote. “I think people are allowed to be concerned for her health,” another added. One YouTube comment captured what many fans said they were feeling: “as an Ari fan, the song and video are absolutely incredible concepts and incredibly executed but honestly all I can think about is how I hope she’s okay because she literally looks ill.”
Supporters pushed back immediately, arguing that public commentary on a woman’s body — even concern framed as care — crosses a line. “If y’all actually cared about her you wouldn’t be publicly making comments about her body,” one X user wrote. Another replied more bluntly: “mind your own f–kin business.” A third fan made the argument in full: “Leave her body alone. Ariana doesn’t exist for your commentary. She’s out here meeting fans, dropping Petal, and living her life — her weight is not a public discussion. Body-shaming a woman for being thin is still body-shaming. Full stop.”
In a 2024 interview during the promotion of ‘Wicked,’ she spoke at length about the specific discomfort that comes with having your physical appearance treated as a topic open for public debate. “I think that it’s something that is uncomfortable no matter what scale you’re experiencing it on,” she said, describing how even well-intentioned comments about weight — the kind exchanged at a Thanksgiving dinner — carry a particular kind of harm. “Even if you go to Thanksgiving dinner, and someone’s granny says, ‘Oh my God, you look skinnier! What happened?’ or ‘You look heavier! What happened?'” she said. “I think in today’s society, there is a comfortability that we shouldn’t have at all, commenting on others’ looks.”

She went further: “From what you’re wearing to your body to your face to your everything, there’s a comfortability that people have commenting on that that I think is really dangerous.”
She later reshared that interview on Instagram Stories with a single note attached: “resharing this from last year ♡ as a loving reminder to all.”
The reminder did not appear to have settled the conversation. “Petal” is being praised as one of her more visually sophisticated music videos — the retro concept, the audition framing, the period costuming all earned genuine attention. But the discussion that dominated the hours after its release was the same one Grande has been navigating for years: the question of whether her body, her health and her appearance are subjects the public is entitled to weigh in on at all.
