While “Megxit” remains one of the institution’s most heavily publicized scandals, the latest development suggests that King Charles once left his eldest son, Prince William, seething with rage after he made an unusual request to Kate Middleton, ahead of the April 2011 wedding. It all began after the monarch and his wife, Queen Camilla, allegedly asked Kate to change the spelling of her first name from Catherine to “Katherine” during the time of her marriage to William.
Royal author Christopher Andersen states in his May 2026 book, Kate!: The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen, that the relationship between the father and son became laden with conflicts from decades ago.
When King Charles’ Request For Kate Left Prince William Fuming
One alleged source of the rift emerged during the wedding preparations of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. The author mentioned in his book that, during that time, Charles and Camilla allegedly confronted their future daughter-in-law in private and asked her to change the spelling of her first name from Catherine to Katherine.
Queen Camilla reportedly considered the change important because Kate was already widely known by that name. This did not go down well with William, who found the request extremely “insulting” to his then fiancée and her family.
An insider also shared details about the alleged incident and told Radar Online, “For Catherine, it felt like they were reaching into something incredibly personal, the name her parents chose for her and the way she has been known her entire life. Being asked to alter that, even just a letter, struck her as strange and quite intrusive, especially when the public already recognized her as Kate.”
Prince William Reportedly Found King Charles’ Request Offensive to Kate’s Family
The source revealed that the Prince of Wales reacted “very strongly.” He felt that this request and the interference with Kate Middleton’s name were very offensive to her family.
The insider added, “He was seething and viewed the name-change suggestion as needless interference and, more importantly, as disrespectful to the Middleton family.”

Prince William reportedly found this request from his father and Camilla completely unacceptable and was genuinely upset that his now-wife was being asked to change something as personal as her name.
The source said, “In his mind, changing his wife’s name to suit a neat set of royal initials was completely unacceptable. He was genuinely angry that anyone thought it appropriate to try to rebrand something as fundamental as her own name.”
Additionally, another source mentioned that Prince William is “fiercely protective” of Kate Middleton and very respectful of her parents, Michael Middleton and Carole Middleton. Hence, this request from King Charles and Queen Camilla to allegedly meet their “royal aesthetic preference” felt extremely invasive.
The insider revealed, “He saw it as crossing a line in terms of how far the institution could reach into their private lives. In private, William was unequivocal. He made it plain that there would be no alteration, and that clarity is what brought the whole discussion to an abrupt end. It became a small but telling flashpoint between a more traditional mindset where everything is molded to fit the royal mold and the modern stance William and Catherine are trying to take.”
