Gabrielle Union is opening up about a dark moment in her life and its lasting effects. The actress says that being the victim of sexual assault has had a great impact on her, particularly since having kids. That has made her a little paranoid about people.

She shared online that she’d been sexually assaulted when she was 19. Now 53, she admits that she still lives with the horrors of her past on occasion. That said, Gabrielle says that she’s gotten to a much better place with coping.

Gabrielle suffers from major PTSD after the trauma

Even decades after her abuse, Gabrielle still struggles with that from time to time. On her Instagram post, she shared that she has “lived with PTSD for 34 years.” Gabrielle adds that even with all the therapy she went through, there were times when “recovery still felt out of reach.” After 34 years of searching, though, she says that she realized there was a treatment designed to aid those going through trauma like hers.

Gabrielle says thanks to the treatment, she’s been able to move forward and be a better parent to her child. For years, Gabrielle has struggled with her anxiety and issues regarding PTSD. Her daughter Kaavia said in February that she doesn’t find her mother’s work “cool.”

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, something which is obviously near and dear to Gabrielle’s heart. The She’s All That actress says that therapy has helped her find peace at home and in her relationships.

For over a decade, she has been married to former NBA superstar Dwyane Wade. Gabrielle says that she is proof that those who are victims of assault can come back from that. “Recovery is possible” said Gabrielle in her post. Her film Forbidden Fruits came out in theatres last month. Meanwhile, her movie The Casket Girls is currently in post-production.
