Newly obtained documents have confirmed the official cause of Eric Dane‘s death. The update reveals the medical circumstances behind the Grey’s Anatomy alum’s death in February. Dane’s family had previously opened up about his battle with ALS.

Eric Dane’s cause of death revealed, reports claim

According to his death certificate obtained by PEOPLE, Eric Dane died of respiratory failure with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) listed as an underlying cause.

Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, a year after publicly revealing his ALS diagnosis. The actor is survived by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two teenage daughters, Billie and Georgia. His family confirmed the news in an official statement that read, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.”

The statement continued, “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight.”

Concluding their message, Dane’s family added, “He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Shortly after his passing, Netflix posthumously released Dane’s final interview as part of the documentary series Famous Last Words. In the interview, which Dane recorded three months before his death, the actor left his daughters words of solace and encouragement. “Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words,” Dane said at the end of his long, emotional statement.
