Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed his exit from Portugal’s national team amid a rumored rift with head coach Jorge Jesus

Ronaldo said, “In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to”

Jesus was planning to start Gonçalo Ramos over Ronaldo in their game against Denmark

Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out about his decision to leave Portugal’s national team training camp.

Ronaldo, 41, announced his departure from the team in a post on Instagram on Wednesday, Sept. 30. “After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp,” the confirmed in a message translated from Portuguese.

The soccer star added, “In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”

Portugal is scheduled to play Denmark on Thursday, Oct. 1 in a UEFA Nations League.

According to ESPN, the team said they will continue on with its remaining 24 members, and shared in a statement: “The entire delegation remains fully focused on the national team’s upcoming fixtures and on achieving our goals.”

Before Ronaldo’s exit, Coach Jorge Jesus told reporters, including ESPN, that his players are aware that the “rules are the same for everyone” and that he planned to start Gonçalo Ramos over Ronaldo in Thursday’s matchup with Denmark.

Jesus told reporters he did “not know what’s going to happen in the game” and added, “If we need [Ronaldo] to play [at some point], he’ll play. If not, he won’t.”

The head coach, however, denied any tension between himself and Ronaldo. “It seems like there was an issue between us, but there was no issue,” he said, per ESPN.
