More than 4,500 pounds of ready-to-eat stew products sold in eight states are being recalled, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The USDA's Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall on certain Sempio chicken stews on Sept. 25, saying it was imported from Korea without proper USDA inspection.

FSIS inspects certain imported meat, poultry and egg products after they arrive in the United States, even if they were previously inspected in their country of origin. This is to verify that imported products meet the same food safety, labeling and regulatory requirements that apply to those made domestically.

Food that is imported without undergoing that process is often recalled, as FSIS cannot guarantee it meets safety and quality standards.

Federal officials are concerned the stew could be in the pantries of homes or retailers. Here's what to know.
