During an appearance at the Altria Theater in Richmond, Va., on Monday, Dec. 29, Chase, 82, was asked which of his iconic films he would like to make a sequel to. He answered that he’d want to see a follow-up to 1986’s Three Amigos! costarring comedians Steve Martin and Martin Short.

“Right now they’re busy on TV making that ‘I only have murders in my building,’ ” Chase said of his former costars, before his wife, Jayni, corrected him saying, “Only Murders in the Building. It’s a very good show.”

The Saturday Night Live alum agreed, saying, “It’s a good show. Yes, it’s good, they’re good, but they really are lacking me. That’s where we gotta get going.” Chase then argued, “If you really want to have a movie with Steve and Marty, you have to have me.”

Jokes aside, the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation star admitted, “I miss them, that’s all I’m saying. I really miss them, they’re great.”

Martin, 80, and Short, 75, have starred on the Hulu Emmy-winning series alongside Selena Gomez since 2021. It was renewed for season 6, which is currently in production.

When asked about including Chase in the series in 2022, executive producer and co-creator John Hoffman told Deadline, “There will be plans for many, many other amigos and otherwise and that’s in process right now.” But there has been no indication that Chase is in talks to appear on the show in the seasons since.

Martin explained during a 2019 interview that he and Short were closer with one another than with Chase, blaming proximity. “He lives on the wrong coast,” he said of Chase at the time.

The actor added, “When our friendship was forming, we lived on the West Coast and he lives on the East Coast. He had a bunch of family. I had no family at that time. And Marty became my child. It just didn’t work out. We would run into each other on different things.”

“But certainly when we made that film we were all bonded very quickly. And we used to have a lot of dinners for years,” Short continued.

Notably, Short participated in the upcoming CNN documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not and is featured in the trailer while Martin opted not to make an appearance.

During a recent interview with Variety, director Marina Zenovich was asked if she viewed the absence as a sign that Martin didn’t like Chase. “I can’t answer for them, but I think that the absences speak for themselves,” Zenovich said. “Whether it’s scheduling, personal, or saving it for their own doc.”

I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not premieres Jan. 1 at 8 p.m. EST / 5 p.m. PST on CNN.
