Ben Affleck has responded to the controversy surrounding Matt Damon’s claim that Netflix asks filmmakers to repeat their movie plots for viewers who may be distracted while watching. The actor has rejected the suggestion that the streaming service follow such a practice. Affleck’s comments come as the pair’s remarks about Netflix continue to draw attention.

Ben Affleck clarifies Matt Damon’s Netflix plot-repetition remarks

Ben Affleck has pushed back on the interpretation of Matt Damon’s recent comments about Netflix and its approach to storytelling.

Addressing the discussion at the Bloomberg Screentime conference on Wednesday night, Affleck said the streaming service does not have a policy requiring filmmakers to repeat a movie’s plot for viewers who may be distracted by their phones.

The actor recalled the reaction to the comments and said, “I’ve never met anybody who’s had a note that idiotic and brazen.” He rejected that interpretation, adding, “There’s absolutely no truth to that.”

The discussion dates back to January, when Damon appeared alongside Affleck on The Joe Rogan Experience. While speaking about their Netflix action movie The Rip, Damon said the streamer required screenwriters to repeat the story “three or four times” because audiences could be watching while using their phones.

Netflix later addressed the claim directly. In March, film chairman Dan Lin denied that the company has any rule requiring plots to be repeated. Speaking during a Netflix slate presentation, Lin said, “There’s no such principle.”

The executive said the company does not repeatedly explain its plots across its movies and television shows. He added, “I mean, if you watch our movies or TV shows, we don’t repeat our plots. I don’t know where that comment came from.”

Affleck’s comments at the Bloomberg conference also touched on his upcoming Netflix project, Animals. It is scheduled for release on October 9, 2026.
