Anne Hathaway addressed rumors that her call for body inclusivity in The Devil Wears Prada 2 resulted in the firing of models who were already cast in the film
During an interview on Good Morning America, the actress confirmed that "nobody lost their jobs" and that her suggestion of representing different figures "created more" opportunities
Hathaway said in a previous interview that she asked producers to hire models of varying body types after noticing a lot of "traditionally sized models" already in the movie
Anne Hathaway is clearing her name after statements she made about The Devil Wears Prada 2 casting led some fans to believe that her suggestion for body inclusivity resulted in the firing of models who were already part of the film.
During her April 27 appearance on Good Morning America, the Oscar winner, 43, was asked about wanting to see a more diverse array of bodies in the movie, which she previously said she advocated for when she noticed many "traditionally sized models" on set.
While she celebrated the wide range of figures represented in the sequel, she also took a moment to clarify that the recasting didn't cost anyone their jobs.
"It was this quick thing that happened on set, and now it's become a much bigger story," she began. "Actually, I do want to mention some misinformation getting out there right now that people were fired because of the size inclusivity, and that just didn't happen."
She clarified, "Nobody lost their jobs; in fact, it created more jobs. It was just about making sure that so many different body types saw themselves in a moment in the script..."
Hathaway, who reprises her role as Andy Sachs, didn't want to give away a part of the movie where everyone has their moment but, she explained, "There's a song that [Lady] Gaga wrote and it's a beautiful amazing song. Isn't it better when you see so many different types of bodies up there with that?"

Hathaway talked about depicting the fashion industry through a modern lens, as opposed to when the first film came out in 2006, in an Etalk interview conducted at the April 20 premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in New York City.
Speaking with the outlet, she said, "We also know in the last few years that the fashion industry can take a more inclusive approach to beauty standards and I think that we're all kind of happier when it's like that, when everybody feels included." She added of her involvement in casting, "I just went up to the producers and said, 'Hey, do you think that we could?' And they looked up, and they said, 'We're so embarrassed we didn't notice, and of course.' And within two hours, suddenly, there were more girls there. It made me happy."
In a March 25 article published by Harper's Bazaar, Meryl Streep (who plays Miranda Priestly) commended Hathaway's determination to make real change in the industry.
Reflecting on their time at Milan Fashion Week prior to embarking on TDWP2 press tour, Streep said she was “struck by how not only beautiful and young—everyone seems young to me—but alarmingly thin the models were. …"
"I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Annie clocked it too,” Streep added, “and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She's a stand-up girl.”
