Now everybody in the 313, put your hands up and catch up on *8 Mile*’s cast with us.

By 2002, Eminem already had pop culture in a chokehold. His music was critically acclaimed, his fame seismic, his album sales through the roof. Through his unvarnished reflections on the path to fame, his background became just as well known as his controversial lyrics and irreverent music videos.

*8 Mile* is a semi-autobiographical look at Eminem’s rise. Marshall Mathers naturally takes to the role of B-Rabbit, a white rapper trying to make his name in the predominantly Black battle rap scene of Detroit.

Off the stage, Rabbit has a tumultuous personal life. There’s his drug-addicted mother — played by Oscar winner Kim Basinger and based on Em’s real mom — and a young sister based on his daughter Hailie. Outside the house, he has a dead-end job, a loyal crew, and a habit of taking the occasional beating — verbal, physical, or both — from a gang he ultimately takes down in a trifecta of climactic rap battles.

The movie introduced a larger audience to battle rap while offering a largely authentic treatment of inner-city Detroit, all wrapped up in a crowd-pleasing package. It also solidified Eminem’s place in music history and further expanded rap’s mainstream viability when “Lose Yourself”* *became the first hip-hop song to win an Academy Award.

It’s time to lose yourself and find out what’s up with the cast of *8 Mile*.

Eminem portrays the prodigious but anxiety-riddled battle rapper B-Rabbit.

Not unlike Em’s own difficult home life growing up, B-Rabbit faces challenge after challenge — including being so nervous that he can’t speak in his first battle. Ultimately, he uses his own vulnerabilities against his final opponent, delivering a final set that leaves Papa Doc without any ammunition for return fire.

“I don’t know if Papa Doc was always going to end up speechless,” Eminem previously told Grantland. “But it worked. I had to leave him how he left Rabbit earlier in the movie. And I think the plan was always at the end for me to start dissing myself. Because that’s what I actually did in battles to try and take people’s ammo away.”

Going into *8 Mile*, Eminem was — at barely 30 — one of the most famous musicians on the planet, with hit albums *The Slim Shady LP*, *The Marshall Mathers LP* and *The Eminem Show *under his belt, plus an armful of Grammys.

With *8 Mile*, he landed the No. 1 soundtrack in the world and won an Oscar for “Lose Yourself.” He didn’t rest on his laurels, releasing more hit albums —  *Encore*, *Relapse*, *Recovery*, and *The Marshall Mathers LP 2 *— while becoming one of the best-selling artists of all-time. Most recently, he playfully put his alter ego to bed with the album *The Death of Slim Shady*. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022.

Despite garnering acclaim for his performance, he mostly stuck to spitting rhymes and never took on another major acting role. He has, however, made memorable cameos in *Funny People *(2009) and *The Interview *(2013).

He had a brief performance as real-life Detroit drug dealer-turned-informant “White Boy Rick” on an episode of *BMF*, directed by his friend 50 Cent, and reunited with Adam Sandler for *Happy Gilmore 2 *(2025). Sandler returned the favor, appearing as a guest in the Eminem-produced film *Stans,* about his devoted fanbase.

Eminem has three children, including Hailie Jade, and has become a grandfather as well.

Kim Basinger played B-Rabbit’s erratic mother, who struggles to get by while trying to provide for the family.

“When Marshall and I started doing these really heavy tough scenes, I remember saying, ‘This is only a movie. We’re only pretending, but we have to go for it… I’m going to say some things and it’s going to be horrible,’” Basinger told *Variety *in 2025. “I think we were kind of like two fighters in a ring… To have someone that talented… There’s nobody in the world like him.”

The former model rose to prominence as a Bond girl in *Never Say Never Again* (1983) before delivering a Golden Globe-nominated turn in *The Natural *(1984). The erotic thriller *9½ Weeks *(1986) and rom-com *Blind Date *(1987) helped establish her movie-star bonafides, and soon she booked Tim Burton’s *Batman *(1989) as photojournalist (and Bruce Wayne love interest) Vicki Vale.

After being animated in *Cool World *(1992) and going on the lam in *The Getaway *(1994), she scored her Oscar-winning role as a conflicted femme fatale in *L.A. Confidential *(1997), helmed by her future *8 Mile *director Curtis Hanson.

Basinger is less prolific these days, but she did play a memorable villain in Shane Black’s *The Nice Guys *(2016) and had a key supporting performance in *Fifty Shades Darker *(2017).

Basinger has one daughter, Ireland, from her marriage to Alec Baldwin.

Anthony Mackie (Papa Doc)

Long before he became widely known as a superhero, Anthony Mackie was the menacing leader of the Free World gang — and the film’s climactic battle-rap villain.

*8 Mile* marked Mackie’s film debut. As he’s revealed since, Eminem used some of the up-and-coming actor’s own life details to craft his climactic bars. (But no, Mackie’s real name is not Clarence.)

“Eminem is such a brilliant dude. We’re on set one day… He says, ‘I need something on you.’ So we talked for, like, two hours, chilling,” Mackie said in 2025. “The next day we’re shooting the battle scene, and that’s why I’m standing there like, ‘You’re talking about *me*, you’re not talking about Clarence.’ That has nothing to do with the character. ‘You’re an a--hole, Eminem!’ I’m like, ‘I wanna fight this motherf----r!’”

Papa Doc may have choked in *8 Mile*, but Mackie used the role to fuel a lasting career. From a leading role in Spike Lee’s *She Hate Me *(2004) to key supporting turns in *Million Dollar Baby *(2004) and *Half Nelson *(2006), he’s worked nonstop since. He landed an Independent Spirit nomination for *The Hurt Locker *(2009), and was one-third of the bodybuilding trio in Michael Bay’s *Pain & Gain *(2013), alongside Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg.

Then came his debut appearance as Sam Wilson, a.k.a. Falcon, in *Captain America: The Winter Soldier *(2014), securing his pop-culture legacy for good. He’s played the role ever since — and eventually graduated to being Captain America himself. He'll next play the character in *Avengers: Doomsday* (2026).

Currently, Mackie stars on Peacock's *Twisted Metal *series adaptation.

Mackie has four children with his ex-wife, Sheletta Chapital.

Brittany Murphy (Alex Latourno)

Brittany Murphy played B-Rabbit’s love interest, the blue-collar girl just looking to get out of her hometown.

It was Hanson who emphasized how Murphy’s character had a very positive and motivational effect on Jimmy’s life and perception of the future.

“Curtis sized it up best when he said, ‘Alex basically has all the ambition. Jimmy has all the talent and she’s the only one that really sees within him the talent that he obtains,’” Murphy said in 2002. “All the characters in this film desperately want to get out of their surroundings… in which they are unhappily placed just because of life circumstances. [The film] is about dreams coming true.”

Murphy famously broke out as a scene-stealer in teen classic *Clueless *(1995), and went on to supporting roles in *Drop Dead Gorgeous *(1999) and *Girl, Interrupted *(1999). After her acclaimed performance in *8 Mile*, she pivoted back to comedy, headlining *Just Married* (2003), *Uptown Girls *(2003), and *Little Black Book* (2004).

She later joined the star-studded ensemble of the hard-boiled comic-book adaptation *Sin City* (2005). During this time she was also the voice of Hank Hill’s niece Luanne on *King of the Hill*.

Murphy was married to Simon Monjack from 2007 until her sudden early death in 2009.

Mekhi Phifer (Future)

Mekhi Phifer excelled as the upbeat battle emcee, Future, who was based on Eminem's real-life best friend Proof. Prior to filming, Phifer sat down with Proof to discuss the role.

“[Our conversations were] organic and easy. It wasn’t like he was going to tell me how to portray him … and mind you, I had a little bit of artistic license because it’s *loosely *based on Em and him and their relationship,” Phifer told *Vulture* in 2023. “I picked up some of his mannerisms and the intimate relationship that he had with Em, and then just took it from there.”

After a breakout role in Spike Lee’s *Clockers *(1995), Phifer went on to star in *Soul Food *(1997) and as Othello in *O *(2001). But 2002 became a formative career year. Not only did he appear in *8 Mile *and headline the cult classic *Paid in Full* (2002), but he began his long-lasting role as Dr. Greg Pratt on *ER*.

While still booking movie roles like Zack Snyder’s *Dawn of the Dead* (2004), Phifer capitalized on his TV success starring in the crime drama *Lie to Me* and the *Doctor Who* spinoff *Torchwood*.

After a run in the *Divergent *movie franchise, the New York native starred on *Truth Be Told* and scored a recurring role on Kaitlin Olson’s hit procedural *High Potential*.

Phifer has been married to Reshelet Barnes since 2013. He has two children from prior relationships.

Omar Benson Miller was B-Rabbit’s upbeat, jovial friend Sol.

Miller also appeared in 50 Cent’s semi-autobiographical film *Get Rich or Die Tryin’* (2005). He went on to become a regular on *CSI: Miami *and played a fictional ex-pro football player on *Ballers*.

The veteran character actor has also done regular voice work — including classic cartoon reboots like *Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles *and* Rugrats. *

Most recently, Miller was Cornbread, Smoke and Stack's friend-turned-bloodsucking foe, in the Oscar-winning *Sinners* (2025).
